Enrique Martín Morales, more commonly known as Ricky Martin, is a Puerto Rican pop musician, actor and author. He was born on December 24, 1971, and at the age of twelve he began his career with the all-boy pop group, Menudo. After five years with the group, Ricky released several Spanish-language solo albums throughout the 1990s. In 1999, after he had released multiple Spanish albums, he performed “The Cup of Life” at the 41st Grammy Awards show, and this became a catalyst in bringing Latin pop to the U.S. music scene. Ricky then released “Livin’ la Vida Loca” which helped him obtain his enormous success worldwide. This song is seen as the song that started the Latin pop explosion of 1999. It made the transition for other Spanish-speaking artists easier to move into the English-speaking market. The song has sold over 8 million copies since its release, making it one of the best selling singles of all time. Ricky Martin’s first English album has sold over 22 million copies and is one of the best selling albums of all time.
